Meet Elena

Not every investigator carries a badge. Some bring a different set of skills to the search for the truth.

Meet Elena Navarro, an environmental investigator and one of the central characters in my novels Buried Secrets and The Cottonwood Children.

Raised in central Washington by parents who worked as migrant orchard labourers, Elena understands the land, the people who depend on it, and the secrets that rural communities sometimes keep buried.

Her scientific training, sharp eye for detail, and ability to read the landscape make her an invaluable member of the investigative team. But Elena brings something else to the job: empathy. She understands that behind every set of remains is a human story waiting to be told.

In Buried Secrets, and later in The Cottonwood Children, Elena works alongside Detective Sergeant Maggie Sullivan and Sarah Ingram to uncover the truth behind crimes that have remained hidden for years.

For Elena, the evidence may lie in the soil, the landscape, or a forgotten detail. Finding it is only the beginning. The real challenge is discovering the story it tells.
